Glass Christmas Ornaments
Germany was the first country to begin making Christmas ornaments that people could buy. This process took place around the 1850’s. The main material used to create the various Christmas ornaments was glass. Ironically, many of the early shapes were of fruits and nuts. It wasn’t long though before some other popular shapes were introduced including hearts and stars.
The process of glass blowing was very popular in Germany as well during this time. Corning Company began using machines they had for producing light bulbs to make Christmas ornaments. They made more than 300,000 of the each day and they sold very well. Woolworth’s was one of the prime locations where people went to buy their Christmas Ornaments. They loved the selection that was offered as well as the low prices.
Today the tradition of hanging Christmas ornaments on the tree is still very popular. You can even make your own ornaments if you wish.
