A Brief History of Christmas

Christmas time is the best time of the year for most people all around the world and every country has its very own Christmas customs and traditions. The History of Christmas initiated 2000 years ago, in Israel, in a small town called Bethlehem. But most countries have their own start point for their very own history of Christmas. Following this pattern, the United stated embraced Christmas as a traditional and national holiday a bit later, because it itself is a much younger country. Even so, USA's history of Christmas is rich and eventful, showing the world how such a great holiday has the power to bring joy and bliss into every soul.

The History of Christmas's Roots

Many, many hundreds of years ago, the Catholic Church decided to celebrate the birth of God's child, Jesus Christ. According to the bible Jesus has been born about 2000 years ago, on December the 25th. Over the years, people embraced the holiday even though if they weren't followers of the Catholic Church. Naturally, traditions and folklore regarding Christmas appeared in each region of the world. Each year a new country embraced Christmas as a national holiday and in time, all their different touches blended to form the Christmas we know and adore today. These are exactly the aspects we imply when we want to talk about the history of Christmas. We mostly refer to the traditions that united to give life to our modern Christmas holiday, rather than the moment in time when Christmas appeared.

USA's very own history of Christmas

As it formed as a country a lot later, the United States was pretty much the last country that made Christmas a national holiday. Although the Christmas's this county had are small in numbers compared to other countries, USA citizens managed to structure a vast history of Christmas in a rather short period of time. Here Christmas was first introduced through schools, when the Sunday school start giving Christmas parties for children and their parents at the beginning of the 1800's. They managed to accustom people with the gift giving tradition and Santa Clause. The first American state that adopted Christmas as a national holiday was Alabama and shortly after followed Washington DC. In a matter of years, the entire American territory officially made Christmas a national holiday.

Nowadays, in America, Christmas is less about its true meaning (the birth of Christ) and more about having fun and spending time with family and friends. But the good part about this is that people still feel the traditional bliss around Christmas time, witch means that deep down in their hearts they still remember what the real meaning of Christmas is.
